Methodology: How we calculate our prices

All prices shown on the homepage, regional overviews, and brand comparisons are calculated as the median — the middle value when all station prices are sorted in order.

Why median instead of average?

Individual outliers (very expensive motorway stations, delayed price submissions) distort the arithmetic average significantly. The median is robust against these outliers and better reflects what a driver actually pays at a typical station.

Freshness

Only stations whose price has been updated in the last 3 days are included in the calculation. Prices outside €0.50–€3.00 are discarded as implausible.

Lower-bound estimates (Austria only)

For Austrian stations that the E-Control API does not currently return a price for (typically because they are not among the 5 cheapest in their area), we use a lower bound inferred from nearby stations. This lower bound feeds into the national and regional median so that more expensive stations are not systematically underrepresented.

Historical values

Trend lines show only actually recorded prices (without lower-bound estimates). Current values and the latest point of a chart may therefore differ by about 1 ct on brand and regional pages. Before 9 March 2026 we did not archive individual station prices — for this period, the chart shows the average calculated at the time, which typically runs 1–2 ct higher than the median.
